Ditch These 3 First Aid Myths
Mom knows best, right? Well, not always. Some of the health advice she may have passed on isn’t so accurate. Here are three first-aid-related myths you should ditch and what to do instead.
1. Clean a wound with hydrogen peroxide.
Save yourself the sting. Hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol can damage the tissue and make it take longer for your wound to heal. Instead, rinse the cut with soap and water for five minutes to get it completely clean.
2. Let a wound air out.
Allowing a wound to dry out and form a scab will delay the healing process. It needs moisture to get better. After cleaning a wound, apply petroleum jelly and cover the skin with a bandage. Wash the wound and change the bandage daily until it goes away.
3. Apply ice to a burn.
Icing a burn may seem like a good idea, but it’s better to run it under cool running water for several minutes. This will stop the burning action and reduce pain and swelling. Don’t break any blisters, which can increase your risk for infection. Keep the burn covered with a bandage that doesn’t stick to it.
